Self Guided Walk from centre of Sicily to the coast

Walk from the centre of Sicily across the Madonie Mountains along Roman road which once trade route.  Along the way you will meet warm and welcoming the Sicilian hospitality.

In the high mountain before descending towards the coast, on route  600 - 800 year old oak and maple trees,  towards the end of the walk there's 300 year old Holly forest.
The trails are mostly unmarked but well described and easy to follow. 

 

Day 1: 

Transfer from Catania airport to Enna
Overnight stay at Grand Hotel Sicilia.
Dinner included.

 

Day 2: 

Enna to Gangi

Drive to Villadoro (45mins) where you commence walking on the old trade route (from the centre of Sicily to the coastline) towards Gangi, small town perched like a tortoise shell on top of Monte Marone.
As you arrive at the foothills of Gangi, the walk takes you uphill along the small streets towards the ‘centro storico’ with its Baroque townhouses and interesting churches, typical of the Madonie ‘Baroque’ style. The final part of the walk is downhill to the hotel.
Two nights stay in a 1700’s restored Baronial villa with tranquil surroundings, situated in the valley behind Gangi.
Breakfast and dinner included.
Distance:    Option of 10.82km/6.83miles (4 hours) or 14.5km / 9 miles (5 hours) or 18.7km / 11.7 miles (6 1/2 hours)

 

Day 3: 

Gangi to Geraci
From Villa Raino you climb an ancient drover’s roads, then down to the valley on the old trade route crossing a Roman bridge and up an ancient mule tracks lead us through wild scenery, to the 11C ruined Saracen castle of Geraci. Siculo. Time to wonder around the town before returning by car to your accommodation.

Day 4: 

Geraci to Petralia Soprana

The route manager will drive you (30mins) from Villa Raino to the end of yesterday’s walk in Geraci.
The walk commences below the 11thC ruined Saracen castle of Geraci Siculo 1077m uphill winding uphill on wide forest track, through the woodlands descending through open countryside with wonderful views towards Mt Etna, Enna and Gangi. The last section of the walk to the Medieval town of Petralia Soprana is partly on tarmac road.
Overnight stay at Residenza Petra, Petralia Soprana
Breakfast and dinner included. Dinner at local restaurant 5 minutes walk from your accommodation.
Distance:   11.5km/6.9 miles (4 hours)  

 

Day 5:   

Piano Pomieri – Piano Sempria – Castelbuono
A short drive to arrive at Piano Pomieri where the walks starts through woodland with 600 to 800 years old maple and oak trees. Continuing through the Madonie mountains enjoying the spectacular views across the mountains and towards the sea.  The walk takes you to a forest with 1,000year old Holly tree, where you can observe the unique trees sitting by a traditional thatched roof shepherd hut.  The path finishes at Piano Sempria.
Transfer accommodation located in the historical centre of Castelbuono.
Overnight stay at Hotel Paradiso delle Madonie, Castelbuono
Breakfast and dinner included.  Dinner at local restaurant a short walk from the hotel.
Distance:         9km / 6 miles (4 1/2 hours)

 

Day 6:  

Gibilmanna – Sant’Ambrogio
Leaving Castelbuono you will be driven to the nearby village of Isnello.  Time to stroll around the quaint medieval village before driving the Sanctuary of Gibilmanna dedicated to the Madonna perched high on Pizzo Sant’Angelo, said to be the first on the island to be dedicated to the Madonna.  From here the walk descents on a wide path, with magnificent sea views across the coastline and the Aeolian Islands. Continuing along country lanes passing small plots of cultivated olive and citrus groves down to the village of Sant’Ambrogio.
Accommodation in self-catering apartments the village of Sant’Ambrogio or hotel, B & B in Cefalù.
Tasting of homemade wine at Mimmo's cellar followed by dinner at Osteria Bacchus, Sant’Ambrogio.
Two nights stay.

Distance:    11.53 km/7.16 miles (4 - 4 1/2 hours) 

 

Day 7:  

Sant’Ambrogio circular walk

The walk commences in the village of Sant’Ambrogio where there are Bars you can buy water to take on the walk.  Initial terrain is on the old stony mule track which commences at height 150m, continuing onto forest tracks through cork oak woods “Bosco di Guarneri” at 360m.  The path contours around the mountain behind Guarneri with views across the Madonie Mountain range.  On the way one can stop at the shepherd’s hut (from February to end of August early September) to taste the freshly made ricotta cheese, before returning on a small path above the coastline back to the village. 
Breakfast included at local bar, dinner not included.
Distance:       Option of   5.5 km/3.4 miles  ( 2 1/2 hours) or 7.5 km/4.66 miles (3 hours)
                 

 

Supplement walk: - for keen walkers can add an extra day to the tour or can be substituted for another walk.

Petralia Soprana to Pomieri

From Petralia Soprana a downhill track through fields takes you to Petralia Sottana. Time to stroll through the town before continuing the walk on a tarmac road to reach the hospital where the path that we will follow “Sentiero della Pace” begins.

From the hospital the walk begins on the Regia Trazzera of the Transhumance, (Petralia-Castelbuono). There are some white and red CAI marks along the way. After approximately 40 minutes, you reach the Ponte di San Brancato.  At the bridge a small path starts to climb on open landscape with wonderful views than eventually the path becomes stony, through pine woods to reach Portella Mele before descending to Piano Pomo. 
Overnight stay at Hotel Pomieri.
Breakfast and dinner included.
