AEOLIAN ISLANDS – CEFALU’S COASTLINE
Guided excursion to the Aeolian islands

(Spring, summer and at the beginning of autumn)
The Aeolian islands are a group of seven small volcanic islands: Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Panarea, Stromboli, Alicudi and Filicudi. There are still two active volcanos, on Stromboli and Vulcano. The Stromboli usually has eruptions every 30 minutes, with lava, stones and ash ejections that are very spectacular. On Vulcano there are only sulphur emissions that gives the island its particular “smell” and allow you to take sulphur mud baths. Each island is different, but all of them offer beautiful and special landscapes as well as picturesque villages with small white houses and tiny streets.

ARCHEOLOGICAL SITES
Himera excavations:

Founded in 648 BC by colonists from Zancle, Himera was the scene of a crushing defeat of the Carthaginians at the hands of allied forces of Agrigento and Syracuse (480 BC). In 408 BC, the Carthaginians, newly invading the island, took and razed the town to the ground. The ancient town is situated a top a hill south of the main Messina-Palermo road. Here sections of the walls and remnants of three temples were brought to light. The objects found on the site are displayed in a museum nearby the archaeological site.
The most important and best preserved of the buildings, is the Tempio della Vittoria (5th century BC), located at the bottom of the hill, north of the main road. It seems that Greeks forced Carthaginians to build it to celebrate their victory in 480 BC. Dedicated to Athena, it was built in Doric style with six columns at the front and 14 down each side. Remains of columns, the cella, the pronaos and the opisthodomus are clearly visible. The eaves were marvellously decorated with sculpted lions' heads, now in the Archaeological Museum of Palermo.
How to get there: exit Buonfornello from A19 Catania/Palermo.
Archeological site Halaesa:

Halaesa was founded in 403 BC by Arconide, tyrant of Herbita (a Sicani city). The excavations have brought to light buttresses of the acropolis and the place of the ancient Agora. Some elements of the urban structure of the city were also found: the streets were paved with bricks and parallel to a large central road that lead to the Agora..
How to get there:
Take the motorway A20 PA-ME, exit Tusa. Take the SS113 Settentrionale Sicula , Messina direction, until Castel di Tusa, then follow the signs for Tusa after 3 kms on right hand side "Halaesa"

Fiumara d'Arte Park:

Fiumara of Tusa is an old river bed wich once flowed through the Nebrodi Mountains.
It was an idea of Antonio Presti to create a sculpture park to blend the contemporary area with the rugged beauty of the area.
On the 6th January 2006, after 25 years of battle with local authorities, finally the Regional Government approved the creation of the Fiumara d’Arte as a cultural and tourist center.
